I'm trying to drum up some web design business; I'd really like to break into the local market and do sites for local businesses. I've found several local business sites that are just so sad-looking, like something an 8 year old learning HTML would do. What I'd like to do is work up a sample design for them, then send them a printout of it along with a letter including a link to where they could view a screenshot online, in a letter. I'm having a terrible time trying to figure out how to word the first part of the letter. Is there a nice way to say, "Your web design is really bad, would you like some help?" without actually saying it?
Looking at your web site, I was inspired to design something for you.

You're welcome. :) I hope you can find success (and a lot of extra income!)... I've loved every site I've seem that you've designed. :) You have a great eye for color and design.

I would just say something to the effect of you're sending out everyone locally your business card and/or a sample design of what you could do to maximize their business/advertisement online. Make it sound kinda like it's (their current page) good, but you can make it EVEN BETTER!

I second Dana's idea. Esp. send along your business card with the sample (you can get free cards at vistaprint.com - I got some for both my freelance editing and my jewelry business. Not bad at all...)

I think your idea of showing them a sample design of what their website could look like is a great idea. That way they can already see how awesome it would look and you'd definately get their attention.
